The Kawarthas is rich in nature. With over 50 lakes, thousands of acres of parks, and hundreds of kilometers of trails, there is much to discover. Many resorts provide complimentary kayaks and canoes, or hire a guide for a multi-day trip. Bring your fishing rod, and catch some lunch.

fishing Peterborough County is made up of eight townships with approximately 54,000 people. The eight townships are: Asphodel-Norwood, Cavan Monaghan, Douro-Dummer, Galaway-Cavendish & Harvey (which is now Municipality of Trent Lakes), Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha, Otonabee-South Monaghan, and Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield (which is now called Selwyn Township). The county is located in Central-Eastern Ontario, about 125km from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Up North it consists of lakes, rivers and landscape and is generally used for recreation with very little settlement in the area. The South offers an abundance of agricultural land with several small communities. The Kawarthas are a major tourist attraction in the county; mostly because of its beautiful lakes and rivers, hosting many cottagers and fishermen over the summer months. To get into a little more detail about each township, the items that will be addressed here are: lakes, fishing, cottaging, the community, golf courses, etc.

When cruising down Highway 7 you come into the little town of Norwood. You look around, see a few signs, a few schools, churches, and a large fairground which hosts the Norwood Fair annually and is a huge hit. Then you continue on your way. Well, for the community living in and around Norwood, that is their home. The residents are very proud of their community and host baseball tournaments, large agricultural fairs (Norwood Fair), turkey dinners for the whole community, and so on. The town is full of independently owned and operated businesses, the community centre hosts the hometown hockey and lacrosse teams of all ages, and has their very own golf course, Oakland Greens Golf & Country Club, which is situated on 7th Line Asphodel. They wouldn't have it any other way.

Cavan Monaghan Township is a rural area that includes several small villages including Bailieboro, Cavan, Fraserville, Ida, Mount Pleasant, Springville, Five Mile Turn, and the Historical Village of Millbrook. The Township is located about 20km south west of the City of Peterborough with the Highway 115 and County Road 28 running right through the Municipality. The Township offers three Golf Courses:; Baxter Creek, Heron Landing, and Keystone Links. It offers many parks and trails for the community to explore, as well as the Whitfield Landing Boat Launch which is community accessible. The community hosts a quirky little theatre production called the 4th Line Theatre which plays occur throughout the summer months. The township also hosts the Kawartha Downs and speedway and the OLG Slots which is located on Highway 28.

Douro-Dummer Township is located about 5-10 minutes east of the City of Peterborough, and borders four lakes: Clear Lake, Kathewanooka Lake, Stoney Lake, and White Lake. It is made up of several small villages and acres of farmland. The Township includes Douro, Warsaw, Donwood, McCracken's Landing, Crowe's Landing, Youngs Point, Cottesloe, and Centre Dummer. Some of the places to visit in the area are: the ball diamonds, soccer pitches, playgrounds, swimming areas, picnic areas, horseshoe pits, and a boat launch. Relax at one of their resorts or bed & breakfasts on the lake or in town. Whatever you are looking for, they can accommodate. Stroll through their trails, paddle down the Indian River, visit the Warsaw Caves, and go cross country skiing, skating or snowmobiling around the area. You can also check out the history of the Douro-Dummer settlement in the early 1820's by visiting the Township Office for a historical guide and map.

Galaway-Cavendish & Harvey (Municipality of Trent Lakes) is a township in the rural, mostly wooded northern section of Peterborough County. It is part of the Trent Severn Waterway and has access to the most stunning lakes of the Kawarthas. Some of the events that take place in the area are: The Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival, Buckhorn Farmers and Craft Markets, Cruise Nights, Fishing Derby, Heritage Day Celebration, Lakehurst Carnival, Raise the Roof Golf Fundraiser Tournament, Strawberry Supper, Turkey Supper, Cavendish Carnival, Poker Run, and the "Bacon & Forsaken" Bake Sale & Flea Market. Majority of these events take place at the following recreational facilities: Cavendish Community Centre, Galaway Community Centre, Lakehurst Hall, and the Buckhorn Community Sports Complex.

Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township is centrally located between Belleville and Peterborough and only 90 minutes from Toronto. This charming and rural community is located in the southeast corner of Peterborough County. The township offers a fairly large arena, surrounded by a ballpark, picnic area, playground, meeting room, and banquet hall. They offer public skating, access to two parks, three playgrounds, and seven boat launches on seven different lakes: Belmont, Round, North River, Crowe, Kasshabog, Jack and West Twin Lake.

North Kawartha Township is a seasonal destination and is located in the eastern part of Peterborough County and is accessible by Highway 28. The area is comprised mainly of forest, lakes, creeks and rivers which provide for an abundance of wildlife, scenic views and recreation activities for all ages. There is a fitness centre located at the North Kawartha Community Centre. The Recreation Department consists of three community centres, parks, playgrounds, tennis courts and two beach fronts. The Department is very active in Culture and Recreation Programming. For example, the Department runs the North Kawartha Soccer Club, Baseball Club, Adult Hockey League, Gymnastics Club, Skating Club and the Annual Swim Program at Chandos and Quarry Bay Beach.
